Finding Sanctuary | Conserving rockfish: elders of the ocean

Rockfish, known as rock cod or Pacific snapper to sport and commercial fishers, are popular fishes to harvest and eat. As their name implies, they mostly associate with the rocky bottom, deep below in kelp or deep-sea coral habitats. Rockfish species diversity is high; about 60 species of rockfish (Sebastes spp.) live in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary alone. Rockfishes are long-lived, slow-growing and late maturing. A yelloweye rockfish can live to be 150 years old, and females only begin to reproduce at around 16-22 years. Another species, rougheye rockfish, have been aged to 205 years!
